Asphalt Shingle Roofing

Architectural asphalt shingles are the standard roof for most homes: $4.50 to $7.50 per square foot installed, 15 to 25 years of life, and dozens of colors. Impact-resistant Class 4 shingles cost more and hold up better to Kansas and Georgia hail.

A shingle roof is a system

Shingles are the part you see. Whether the roof lasts depends as much on what is underneath and around them:

  • Underlayment — synthetic felt over the deck, plus ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys
  • Drip edge — metal at the roof edge that sheds water into the gutter and protects the fascia
  • Starter strip — the sealed first course that keeps wind from getting under the bottom row
  • Ventilation — intake and exhaust vents that keep the attic from cooking the shingles from below
  • Flashing — at chimneys, walls, skylights and valleys, where most leaks start
  • Pipe boots — rubber collars around plumbing vents, a frequent leak source
  • Hip and ridge cap — the finishing shingles along the peaks

Two quotes for the “same” shingle can differ by thousands because of these components. Ask every contractor to list them.

Shingles and hail

Standard shingles bruise and shed granules in hail; once the granules go, UV breaks down the asphalt. In the hail belt around Kansas City and Topeka, a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is worth pricing, and in the worst hail zones, so is Euroshield rubber.

Frequently asked questions

How long do architectural shingles last?

15 to 25 years in our climates. Attic ventilation, color, sun exposure and hail history move it within that range.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth it?

In hail country, often yes: fewer claims, a longer-lasting roof, and in some cases an insurance discount. Ask your agent what documentation they need.

Can new shingles go over old ones?

Code sometimes allows it, but we do not recommend it: you cannot inspect the deck, the roof runs hotter, and many manufacturers limit the warranty on layovers.
