Completed architectural asphalt shingle roof on a single-story home in Salina, Kansas, seen from the ridge across the neighborhood

A single-story home in a Salina neighborhood, hit by hail in spring. The roof was the headline, but it was not the whole story — the same storm dented the siding and the gutters. We inspected in May 2026 and replaced the roof that September.

The inspection

Hail does not hit one surface. It comes in at an angle, on a wind, and it marks whatever it reaches. So the inspection covered the whole exterior, not just the slopes.

On the roof, bruised shingles across the elevations — granules knocked off, the mat fractured underneath — each one circled so the damage could be counted rather than described. On the walls, dents in the lap siding. On the eaves, dents in the gutter trough. Vents, flashings and window wraps all got the same treatment.

That matters for one practical reason: a homeowner who only asks about the roof usually only gets the roof. The damage to the siding and the gutters is just as real, and it is part of the same event.

What came off

The tear-off went down to the original plank decking — not plywood sheathing, but the individual boards this house was framed with. Under the shingles the old felt had broken down into pieces.

You cannot see any of this from a driveway estimate. It is the reason we tear off rather than lay over: what is under the old roof decides how the new one is built.

What went back on

The new system is Malarkey Legacy architectural shingles with Scotchgard Protector, over ABC Pro Guard synthetic underlayment. American Commercial Roofing is a Malarkey certified installer.

  • Complete tear-off to the deck, with the deck inspected and re-fastened.
  • Synthetic underlayment across the full roof, ice-and-water at the vulnerable details.
  • Malarkey Legacy architectural shingles installed to manufacturer specification.
  • New box vents, pipe flashings and hip-and-ridge cap — none of it reused.
  • Magnet sweep of the drive and yard before the crew left.

The result

A roof built on a deck somebody actually looked at, under a system the installer is certified to warranty.

Common questions

Should I have my siding and gutters checked after hail, or just the roof?

Check everything. Hail arrives at an angle, so the elevation facing the storm often takes as much damage on the walls as the roof does. Dented siding, dented gutter troughs, and damaged vents and window wraps are all part of the same event, and they are easy to miss if nobody looks.

What is the difference between plank decking and plywood?

Older homes were sheathed with individual boards rather than sheets. Plank decking can be perfectly sound, but the gaps between boards and the condition of each one matter for how shingles fasten. It is something we check during tear-off and address before the new roof goes down.

What is a certified installer?

A manufacturer trains and approves the contractor to install its system, which is what lets the contractor offer that manufacturer’s warranty coverage. ACR is a certified installer for Malarkey and IKO shingles and for Euroshield rubber roofing.

Hail damage does not always announce itself. If a storm has come through and you want the whole exterior looked at rather than just the roof, request a free inspection.
